Unit: Conics
Topic: Ellipse
Objectives in the curriculum this website will assist:
Foundational Objective
To become aware of the various conic sections and to demonstrate skill in graphing and writing equations of the conic sections
Learning Objective
B.3.b)
To sketch the graph of an ellipse.
Website: Analyze Math
I would have my students use this applet as an exploration activity on ellipses. After teaching the equation of an ellipse

I would have students discover how changing the different parameters (such as h, k, a, and b) changes the graph. Also students would have already learned the equation and graph of a circle they will be able to link the simliarities of the equations and graphs. I would have students go through the activity on the website that guides the students to conjecture the patterns between the graph and equation. I would have students write about what they have discovered and conjectured. This applet is a timesaver, compared to the pencil and paper method. The applet allows the students to view many graphs with different parameters in seconds.
This would enhance student learning because they are able to take ownership of their own learning by using experiential learning instead of direct instruction.
